Pat, I have just found this one in an Erik Orsenna book I am reading. Mieux vaut tard que jamais. Yes what indeed better than better late than never?
I think it is really useful. For example, I stopped emailing French friends last year and I have had messages, cards, emails that I had until now felt unable to answer. So, yes, you have guessed it. I shall be sending out replies, all starting with please excuse my late response to your message but mieux vaut tard que jamais, n'est ce pas?
BTW, this is a book that I bought some 5 years ago on the recommendation of a French friend and I was totally unable to make head or tail of it. Then, yesterday evening, I picked it up and I am enjoying it so much that I have already read 84 pages and, believe me, for a French book, this is rather good going for me!
